Whale Watching

During the austral winter (July, August and September), les Megaptera Novaeangliae, arriving by the hundreds in the waters of Madagascar, they are born, mate and remain to wean their young before returning to the cold waters.
These long cetacean 15-18 meters have long pectoral fins characteristic of the species.
They have a very sociable nature they manifest by spectacular jumps.

In our center, we organize daily excursions to the "whale watching".
We go by boat, we identify and we approach without disturbing groups of whales, which in general are females with cubs.
We go beyond and 100 meters of them we cut the engines.

At this point, curious, they come our way, pass close to us, thereby allowing us to observe and shoot from close. With a bit of luck, we can manage to hear their "singing", with which they communicate over long distances, and we can immerse ourselves with them to observe underwater and take pictures. When a group moves away, we leave to seek other, to get closer to them and continue the enchantment ...

BALENOPTERA ACUTOROSTRATA

Between October and January, it is possible to identify the common minke whale : long de 8-10 m, it weighs up 9 tonnes. It is a splendid species, who returns from those hunted by the Japanese, Norwegian, Icelanders who capture a hundred a year for "research" ...

WHALE SHARK

Its weight can exceed 30 tonnes, his mouth measuring a meter and a half wide and his skin may have 10 cm thick. It is the whale shark, Rhincodon typus.
Despite the misleading reference, it is a shark whose name highlights the large and the resemblance to the physiology of whales, which feeds on plankton as the other two unique species : le Megachasma pelagios, a very rare shark discovered only 1976, and cetorino, elephant shark. The whale shark lives in Nosy Be and it will not be hard to spot in the boat trips. When it's possible, we immerse ourselves with him to get up close and take a picture. see our whale shark videos

... and there are still humpback dolphins, the stenella and tursiopes who regularly greet our outings by boat ...
