History of the Kaffir festival
Previously called Bourbon Island, The Reunion was, in 1700, of the exploitation of sugar canes and coffee the basis of its economy. This exploitation being of great importance, it was absolutely necessary to have a substantial workforce but paid less. Slavery was the solution.
Later, this practice ended. The 20 December 1848, day marking its abolition, was then a great liberation for the local population. Nowadays, it has become a public holiday celebrated with fervor throughout the island.

On the occasion of the Kaffir Festival, the streets and corners of Reunion Island come alive to the rhythm of maloya and sega. It is in fact a manifestation musical during which spectators are entitled to numerous free concerts offered by local artists.
